sex, money, and miscellany: talking about what matters

negative space

You know those reversible pictures, the ones that are two faces if you see the black and a vase if you see the white, or an old woman and a young woman, or a rabbit and a…something?

What does it mean to see the absence, to identify the empty space as a thing, an entity unto itself? And how long, unprompted, do we see only what we think is there? How does that limit us? How do our available tools, like language and thought structures, limit us further?

These questions are the groundwork of anti-oppression, but we can bring them home and home-er, from out there to in here to right inside our very hearts. There is in all of this a practice of mindfulness, of awareness of what is not as well as what is, and then necessarily on to what could be. If we allow ourselves to be mired in being we are as limited as if we see only forward motion or only the ideals we build on the armatures of reality. We need it all; we need to know what space is there and not there, so we know where we can build, and we know where we can breathe.

All of which is to say, if you are too accustomed to your life as it stands, change everything for a time, get quiet, and wait. In the space, something new will come.
